One Hundred Birds Serenade the Phoenix

The best-known piece of Suona is One Hundred Birds Serenade the Phoenix, which is especially popular in Shandong, Anhui, Henan and Hebei provinces. After a spirited introduction, the orchestra settles down to a fixed accompaniment mode. With this background, the Suona section plays a vigorous, piping tune in imitation of the chirping of birds in flight. The closeness of the mimicry expresses the people's love for nature and the intense scrutiny of ordinary life by folk artists, as well as their virtuosity in performance.

Shi Mian Mai Fu (Ambush on All Sides)

7:08 minutes (2.45 MB)

Shi Mian Mai Fu is a famous ancient Pipa (lute) score of China, which is always played on concerts. A foreigner is as familiar with it just as a Chinese with the Blue Danube.

Shi Mian Mai Fu pictured the battlefield of the ancient war in China. Its boldness and majesty has attracted lots of people. How amazing it is to demonstrate such a vivid picture by Pipa merely with four strings!

Shi Mian Mai Fu tells people the whole process of the battle.

Famous Folk Musician: Blind Abing

Blind Abing's original name was Hua Yanjun. He was born in 1893 and died in 1950. His father and mother died very early, he was adopted by the Taoist Hua Qinghe, master of the local Leizun Temple, and so became a Taoist apprentice. From his childhood onward, Blind Abing learnt music from Hua Qinghe. Later, when Abing came across a tune he liked and whoever was playing it, he did his utmost to learn from them, with the result that he learned to play many of the local instruments quite well.

When he was a Taoist, since he loved performing, he also joined a Chuigu (traditional wind and percussion) ensemble, playing in wedding and funeral processions. The Taoists believed this was causing them to lose face, and so they ejected him from their ensemble. Thus, Abing became a Chuigu player. While being a Chuigu player, again because he loved performing, he often went to the market to play, or wandered about the streets until someone called on him to perform. The Chuigu ensemble believed him to be contravening their customs, and consequently excluded him from their group. In this way, he became a pure and simple wandering street musician.

The "Swiss Psalm" is the national anthem of Switzerland.

2:43 minutes (2.03 MB)

Its history dates back to 1841, when the anthem was composed by Alberich Zwyssig (1808-1854). Since then it has been frequently sung on patriotic events. The Federal Council declined however on numerous occasions to accept the psalm as the official anthem. This was because they wanted the people to decide what they liked as the national song.

First, thank you very much for Unlan's help so that I can upload these Chinese songs. This is chinese classical music. It tells about a sad love story. A girl and a guy love each other, but they can not be together finally because of the objection of their parents. The result is that they change into the butterflies, then they can stay with each other all the time.
