Regarding the website

Ulan Melisbek's picture

Dear All,

I am posting our e-mail exchange with Sebastian here, since some people like Markian are bothered with latest e-mail listing messages.

I also would like to apologize before you all for this issue with the website being escalated so late, several days prior to expiration of the domain name. I have to note that I was really trying to turn attention of the people in WTI to the matter since long. As I wrote in my yesterday's e-mail, I have sent a message to Margrit about the subject and was hoping to get any reply from their side. Unfortunately, their silence took forever. So I had to act and warn you all. Sorry to cause any hurt.

Dear Sebastian,

Thank you for your letter. I generally agree with what Christian told, but have to note the followings.

1. This domain was registered by me through a company, that usually does not drop expired registrations. Instead they offer them for sale through such services like http://www.sedo.com for much higher price than initial registration price. So WTI might ending up paying more money than if it just continued the current registration. And since I am an owner of the domain I could easily change proprietary details for the domain to whatever information you send to me. I urge you not to let the domain expire.

2. As for the transfer of files I will provide your side full FTP access to my server and your technicians can copy all the data. Please, tell Christian to make sure the server has PHP4+MySQL. PHP server should be configured with:

'--with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs' '--prefix=/usr/local' '--with-xml' '--enable-bcmath' '--enable-calendar' '--enable-ftp' '--with-gd' '--with-jpeg-dir=/usr/local' '--with-png-dir=/usr' '--with-xpm-dir=/usr/X11R6' '--with-gettext' '--enable-mbstring' '--enable-mbstr-enc-trans' '--enable-mbregex' '--enable-magic-quotes' '--with-mysqli' '--with-mysql=/usr' '--enable-discard-path' '--with-pear' '--enable-sockets' '--enable-track-vars' '--with-zlib'

More detailed configuration of the server for the site to function correctly can be found at: http://www.milestudents.com/info.php
Transferring of the files and configuring new server can be done at any time later, but as for domain registration, please keep in attention that only four days left ( http://whois.domaintools.com/milestudents.com) until expiration date.

All the best,

Ulan Melisbek

Dear Ulan,

I know that we were talking about the administration and not about the hosting of the milestudents.com-website. We were talking about the transition of the administration of the site to one of the new students. Nobody was expecting what has happened and as we know, most of the MILE7 students do really care about the webpage. So does the WTI, because we are aware of the fact that the possibilities which such a site delivers are of crucial importance in the times of the internet. We very much appreciate your initiative of having created this site.

As we are all interested in this site, and nobody wants to lose it, I have to get certain information from you to make it possible for the WTI to host the site and to pay for the domain.

Christian Steiger told me that the easiest thing to do would be to either rescind the contract with the firm that registered the domain name or let it expire. As soon as you would have done this, the WTI could register the domain with another firm. Furthermore Christian would like to know how much data the site contains, because he is planning to host the milestudents.com-site on the server where the WTI-site is hosted. How the data would be transferred to the new server is another question and mainly depends on you. We could do that through FTP from server to server or you send us a data CD, however you prefer.

Best regards and thank you for your effort,

Sebastian

Dear Friends,

I did not have to, but I have paid for prolongation of the registration for one more year. Just to give WTI have enough time to transfer the website to its account. Otherwise, letting the domain to expire as WTI wanted to do could end up with different complications. Probably, practice is different for Swiss tld zone, as Christian suggested, but nowadays US domain companies do not release expired domains, but try to sell it to third parties.

Just waiting for WTI. But I am afraid they are not as enthusiastic as they are polite in their e-mails. They need to actually act, but not express false readiness to help with saving the website.

Yours,

Ulan
