Chile: The golden rule: keeping a 1% budget surplus

I thought some of you might find the following interview with Chile’s ambassador to Washington, Mariano Fernandez interesting, especially these days when many people are refreshing their knowledge about Chile after the news about Pinochet's death. At the same time the article is a direct subject of our study of International Economics. Read when you have some free time.

Chile is widely recognized as a Latin American success story. Sensible macro-economic policies have produced steady growth and rising standards of living for most Chileans, with the number living below the poverty line cut sharply.

Great day for Latin American history

Today is a great day for Latin America. Even though Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet never saw the darkness of jail, today he passed away at the age of 91 cornered by justiced. Now he shall face his crimes in front of a higher judge (he might even see the tens of thousands murdered or "dissapeared" during his 17 years in power):

Hopefully Latin America or any other place in the world does not have to suffer what Chile suffered during his regime. Civil society has to make sure it doesn´t happen again!
